Institutional Commitment to Academic Excellence
Statement on Academic Excellence, Institutional Responsibility, and Student Success
Moore Marine College was founded to provide rigorous, career-focused higher education in the marine sciences while maintaining high standards of academic integrity, intellectual inquiry, affordability, and institutional accountability. We are a specialized institution offering undergraduate and graduate education in marine biology and marine conservation and as such we at Moore Marine College recognize our responsibility to our students, the State of Florida, the marine science community, and the public. Our college believes higher education should provide students with substantive knowledge, practical skills (both in the classroom and in the field), the ability to think critically and independently, and preparation to contribute productively to their professions and communities.
In response to the national call for postsecondary institutions to clearly articulate their commitments to academic excellence and public responsibility, Moore Marine College affirms the following principles.
Merit-Based and Transparent Admissions
Moore Marine College maintains clear admissions requirements designed to identify students who are prepared to undertake college-level study and who demonstrate the ability and commitment necessary to succeed in our academic programs. Admissions decisions are reached by evaluating the applicants based upon legitimate academic and institutional guidelines and are administered without unlawful preferences or discrimination. Our college will maintain admissions practices that are transparent, consistently applied, and consistent with applicable federal and Florida law.
Free Inquiry and Viewpoint Diversity
Scientific education has always depended upon ability of students and researchers to ask questions, examine evidence, challenge assumptions, and discuss competing interpretations.
Moore Marine College supports the right of students and faculty to engage in respectful academic discussion and inquiry, including on subjects involving scientific, environmental, conservation, economic, and public-policy questions on which reasonable individuals may disagree. Our college in no way requires students to adopt or follow a particular political or ideological viewpoint as a condition of academic success. Students are evaluated on their knowledge, skills and abilities, reasoning, evidence, academic performance, and successful completion of course requirements. While we allow students to challenge currently held beliefs, freedom of inquiry does not include a right to disrupt instruction, interfere with the rights of others, engage in harassment, or prevent the normal operation of the College.
Moore Marine College is committed to maintaining an educational environment in which everyone involved
including students, faculty, and staff can have vigorous discussions, but all parties are treated with professionalism and respect.
Intellectual Pluralism in Curriculum and Faculty
Moore Marine College's curriculum is grounded in established scientific knowledge, evidence-based reasoning, and appropriate professional standards.
Marine biology and conservation routinely involve complex issues relating to both scientific and policy questions. Students have to learn how to look beyond the conclusions and investigate how such conclusions were reached, what methodologies were used, how scientists reach conclusions, how evidence is evaluated, how competing hypotheses are tested, and how scientific understanding changes as new evidence becomes available.
Faculty members are selected based upon appropriate academic credentials, professional qualifications, subject-matter expertise, teaching ability, and the needs of the College's academic programs. At no time does political or ideological conformity become a condition of employment or academic participation.
Affordability, Transparency, and Student Outcomes
Moore Marine College recognizes that higher education represents a significant investment of time, finances and effort by students and their families. Our college is very forthcoming and diligent in clearly communicating
tuition, fees, program requirements, and other educational costs so that students can make informed decisions regarding their education. As a very small, specialized institution, Moore Marine College seeks to use resources toward instruction, laboratory education, intensive field experience, faculty expertise, and educational opportunities that contribute directly to student learning. Our programs are designed to prepare graduates for employment, graduate education, research, conservation, environmental work, and other professional opportunities related to the marine sciences. Our college will continue to evaluate student achievement and educational outcomes and use those results to improve its programs and ensure that the education provided to students remains relevant to professional and workforce needs.
Academic Rigor, Assessment, and Artificial Intelligence
Moore Marine College believes that a college degree must represent genuine academic achievement.
Students are expected to demonstrate a mastery of course material through examinations, written assignments, laboratory activities, immersive field experiences, field research and projects, scientific presentations, and other forms of assessment. Academic standards will not be lowered simply to increase grades, retention, or graduation rates. The emergence of artificial intelligence creates both educational opportunities and significant challenges for academic integrity. Moore Marine College recognizes that AI tools will increasingly become part of scientific and professional work, and students should understand how such technologies may be used responsibly. However, artificial intelligence cannot substitute for student learning. Students must be able to demonstrate their own knowledge, reasoning, scientific understanding, laboratory competency, field competency, and ability to communicate their work. The College will continue to develop assessment practices and academic-integrity standards appropriate to an environment in which artificial intelligence is readily available.
Research Integrity and Foreign Influence
Moore Marine College is primarily a teaching-focused institution with specialized educational and research activities in the marine sciences and does not maintain the type of large federally funded research portfolio found at major research universities. Nevertheless, our college recognizes the importance of research integrity, institutional independence, transparency, and appropriate oversight of partnerships and research activities.
Moore Marine College will comply with applicable federal and state requirements concerning research activities, funding, institutional partnerships, conflicts of interest, and foreign influence.
Our college will not permit outside financial, political, or institutional interests to compromise the integrity of its academic programs or research activities.
Florida's Students, Workforce, and Marine Resources
Moore Marine College is proud to operate in Florida, a state whose extensive coastline, marine ecosystems, fisheries, tourism economy, and coastal communities create a continuing need for individuals educated in marine science, conservation, environmental stewardship, and related fields. Our location provides students with opportunities to study marine science not simply in a classroom, but through laboratory and field experiences involving Florida's marine and coastal environments. We have students out in the field to give them real world opportunities to learn and grow. Our college is committed to preparing American students for productive careers and further education while contributing to Florida's workforce needs and the responsible understanding and stewardship of marine resources. We will continue to evaluate our academic programs in light of changes in science, technology, employment opportunities, and the needs of the communities and industries our graduates may serve.
Our Commitment
Moore Marine College believes that public confidence in higher education must ultimately be earned through performance.
Our responsibility is to provide students with an education that is academically rigorous, intellectually challenging, financially transparent, professionally relevant,
and, most importantly, prepares them for the careers they have chosen to pursue.
We will continue to measure ourselves against that responsibility and to improve our institution as we serve our students, the State of Florida, and the broader marine science community.
